Awkward Reunion
Charlie had spent the majority of the week at Eve’s house. The first half had mostly been because she didn’t really have a choice – while she fortunately had found herself mobile enough to move around the house as needed, she hadn’t felt confident enough to actually make the walk back over to the house next door. She instead had spent those days mostly relaxing on the couch or on Eve’s bed, watching movies and basking in the sensations of Eve slowly digesting.
Eventually, she had reached the point where Eve was no longer kicking, screaming, and pleading, and her stomach started to shrink. She probably could have gone back home then – after all, she only looked hugely pregnant, and she could walk well enough. But why hurry? With days to go before their moms returned home, she was in no rush. As long as she was back in her own house before they returned, things should be fine.
This morning, though, she had finally reached the point where she couldn’t put it off any longer. She had taken a shower in Eve’s bathroom, gotten dressed, and made her way back home. Now she lounged on her own couch, waiting for her mother’s return.
When she finally heard the key click in the lock, she took a deep breath to steady herself.
“Hello? Charlie?” The smooth voice of Eve’s mother filled the house.
Charlie stiffened. She hadn’t expected to have to explain herself to both of them! Hopefully it wouldn’t be too obvious, right off the bat, what had happened? When Charlie pressed her hand against her stomach, she could still feel a fairly large, solid chunk in there, and her shirt and belt line were a lot tighter than they were a week ago, but she didn’t think she looked too different, at least not at a casual glance.
Her brow furrowed. What was she even supposed to say if Mrs. Bordeaux realized what had happened? Somehow, she didn’t think that “Sorry! I kinda accidentally ate your daughter!” was going to cut it.
But she didn’t have time to think about it. She took a deep breath before answering. “Um… hi, Mrs. Bordeaux,” she called out in response.
The foxtaur padded into the living room. “Ah, Charlie, there you are. Is my little Everette…?”
Charlie felt her heart sink as Ms. Bordeaux trailed off. The motherly fennec’s expression fell as she looked over Charlie’s body, and her eyes lingered on the mouse’s stomach. She definitely knew.
Except… something was still off. Did Mrs. Bordeaux let herself in? Charlie hadn’t heard anyone else come in with her. And now that she thought about it, her phone had been awfully quiet for the last few hours. Where were the half-dozen text messages and calls she should have received after their plane landed?
“Charlie,” Ms. Bordeaux said. “Where is Eve right now?”
Charlie’s blood ran cold as she slowly lowered her gaze, staring across the room at her long-time family friend.
“… Where’s my mom?”
